![]() Nonetheless, the subtlety of Zeff’s actions made for a heartwarming moment when Sanji finds out that Zeff sacrificed his leg for him. Young Sanji couldn't care less about pirates, especially Zeff who was stranded on a deserted island with him. What Happened to Zeff’s Leg (Episode 26) Sanji has one of the saddest backstories in all of One Piece. It was the second time that Bon Clay made a sacrifice for Luffy, and while it was also the last time, at least this time he was able to hear Luffy’s heartfelt appreciation for his friend. This was why it was so poignant when Bon Clay revealed his plan to help the Straw Hats escape Impel Down, which involved him fooling everyone by impersonating the Warden Magellan and telling the control room to open the gates to the prison. Bon Clay just has this unique chemistry with Luffy because they’re almost kindred spirits with how wacky their personalities are. The friendship that developed between Luffy and Bon Clay over the course of the Impel Down arc is arguably one of the strongest bonds that Luffy’s ever formed with anyone outside of his crew or his family. Although Luffy has had a good chunk of Haki clashes by this point, this Haki clash between Luffy and Katakuri stands above the rest. After much fighting, they both saw themselves as equals and still had enough strength to use their Haki to continue their fight uninterrupted. This particularly epic moment beautifully portrayed the intensity and will power they both had without saying a word. With newfound respect for each other, they both unleashed their Conqueror’s Haki simultaneously creating this vibrant and impactful energy that knocked out the annoying pirates and destroyed the surrounding environment. The long epic battle between Luffy and Katakuri began to reach its climactic end as the few onlooking Big Mom Pirates berated both of them, an enemy and ally. ![]() It’s not quite as gut-wrenchingly novel as the aforementioned track from the first album, but you do not get to eternally relive the first moment in your life you ever heard a song, despite what Instagram will deceive you into believing. The Lick-level Shame is present on this album: Snow Day is proof, and it is a magnificent track, with lyrical dexterity that gives way to a band maturing in promise. What do I mean by that? Presuming I know what the band feel without knowing them, this album reeks of optimism, but this is still Shame. With follow-up record, Drunk Tank Pink, however, Shame have somewhat changed their tune. “And I hope that you’re hearing me, and I hope that you’re hearing me…” So, in an entirely unoriginal world, Songs of Praise cut right through, straight into Cuzomano vibes territory: this is where I chill this is who I am. Was it derivative of past genres? Sure, but I’m Borgesian: o riginality is dead, dude. There was just something so real to Concrete that wasn’t present in anything else I heard that year. ![]() Shame’s first album, Songs of Praise, did that, and it became a true, personal favourite that year as a result (see my 2018 contenders, pedants and doubters). I love music that grabs me by the shirt and, wrestling with its own emotional decompression, screams misanthropic poetry directly at my face. However, in 2018, this very website - and the way that is Snobbery - was only just getting started, so Shame and this scene went unremarked upon. An album that, in hindsight, tellingly foreshadowed the arrival of black midi, Black Country, New Road, and the formation of a “scene”. Their first album, 2018’s Songs of Praise, was a wonderfully biting, grating and soul-beating musical journey I had not been on in some years. Post-Punk (as the catch-all genre du jour), and Shame spin neatly into this thread. This is what we have been waiting for… or, at least, it’s something like it. |
